Posted by Oana Florescu, Software Engineer

Since my friends share their schedules with me in Google Calendar, when I want to see a movie with them, I can check to see which nights they're free before sending out an email about it. However, I need to switch between Gmail and Calendar in order to check their availability and send an email invitation.

Today, we're launching a new feature that brings tighter integration between Gmail and Calendar, making it easier to create Calendar events from within Gmail. When you compose an email message, there's now an "Insert: Invitation" link right under the subject line.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S8SO1m26VyI/AAAAAAAAAkY/gZ2ZILEjHt8/calendar1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459645699894957858" />
When you click it, a small window appears that displays your availability as well as that of the people you're emailing provided you have permission to see their calendars.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S8SPBuE_slI/AAAAAAAAAkg/LN-ScsqU3iI/calendar2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459645907991507538" />
You can check your friends' availability and choose an appropriate time for the event you're setting up right from there. When you've settled on the details of the event, click the "Insert Invitation" button and a preview of the invitation will appear in your email message:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S8SPhEgYRnI/AAAAAAAAAko/JquZq16Dsuw/calendar3.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459646446587889266" />
When you send the email, the event gets added to your calendar as well as to your friends' calendars.

Posted by Mussie Shore, Product Manager

We've seen lots of people using Google Buzz to share interesting links from around the web. To do so, you had to copy and paste the link from one browser window to another — there weren't buttons that made it easy to post to Google Buzz without leaving the site you're on. Savvy sites like Mashable and TechCrunch quickly got creative and implemented their own Buzz buttons, using Google Reader as the backend. But not every site owner should have to hack together their own version of these buttons (and not everyone who uses Buzz also uses Reader), so this morning we're making copy-and-paste Buzz buttons available for anyone to use.

Starting today, you'll see these buttons around the web on participating sites including: The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, Glamour, YouTube, Blogger, MySpace, GigaOM, PBS Parents, PBS NewsHour, The Next Web, TweetDeck, SocialWok, Disqus, Vinehub, and Buzzzy. Mashable and TechCrunch have updated their sites to use these new buttons too.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width:400px" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S8SN3FIEGQI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/_2HcYZxaB88/logos.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459644625688205570" />
A number of sharing platforms, including ShareThis (pictured below), Meebo, Shareholic, AddThis and AddtoAny have also incorporated the Google Buzz button into their sharing functionality, so you'll see Buzz listed as a choice when you go to share something on many other sites around the web as well.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S8Pyop1EWtI/AAAAAAAAAkI/sCuAZ9R5bh4/ShareThisWidget_April8.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459473953540299474" />
If you want to add Google Buzz buttons to your site, just go to buzz.google.com/stuff, configure your buttons with a couple clicks and copy a few lines of JavaScript. Paste this code where you'd like the Buzz buttons to appear and you're all set.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S8Pybot0l6I/AAAAAAAAAkA/ZE-7MJiXCqs/buzz_buttons.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459473729903171490" />
And if you'd like to promote your own Google Buzz account, we have a button for you, which allows people to follow you on Buzz right from your blog or website. Here's an example using the Google Buzz team's own Buzz account (clicking it will take you to the Buzz team's profile page and from there you can easily follow our team's posts):

Follow on Buzz

You can grab that button code from buzz.google.com/stuff as well.

Posted by Manu Cornet, Software Engineer

Labels are more flexible than folders because a given email can have several labels but can't be in several folders at the same time. A highly requested feature for labels, though, comes from the world of folders: the ability to organize labels hierarchically.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S7t2CBMHwTI/AAAAAAAAAjI/ov5bGHOtkMI/nested_labels.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457085150540579122" />If you think this might be useful to you, go to the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, look for "Nested Labels," enable it and click "Save." You'll then need to name your label with slashes (/) to make it the child of another. For example, let's say you wanted to create a simple hierarchy with a "Home" label, and inside it a "Family" and a "Vacation" label. Just create three labels with the following names:

Home
Home/Family
Home/Vacation

You can then create "Home/Family/Kids," "Home/Pets," etc., to get something like the screenshot on the left. If you had the parent label "Home" before you don't have to create it from scratch.

You can create complex hierarchies of labels if that's the way you like to organize your mail, and you can expand/collapse labels to save space. You'll always be able to tell whether a given label contains unread messages in its collapsed child labels by looking at whether it's bold or not.

Please note that this lab doesn't play nicely with the "Hide Read Labels" lab. You might not get exactly what you expect if you have both labs enabled; for example, the collapse/expand icons won't always appear when they should.

Another highly requested feature is the ability to preview messages to get a glimpse on what they contain and maybe take immediate action without opening them.

This is exactly what "Message Sneak Peek" does. After you turn it on, right-clicking on a line in your inbox shows a preview pane with the message in it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S79V-u8b3wI/AAAAAAAAAjY/2Gh5_pNsK00/message_sneak_peek.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458175809638096642" />
You can also use keyboard shortcuts for a faster sneak-peeking flow (enable keyboard shortcuts in Settings first if you haven't done so): hit 'h' to open a sneak peek card, then navigate with 'j' and 'k,' and dismiss the current card by pressing "Escape." Messages you peak at will stay unread (or it wouldn't really be a sneak peek, would it?).

Happy nesting and peeking!

Posted by Todd Jackson, Product Manager

Shortly after launching Google Buzz, we quickly realized we didn't get everything right and moved as fast as possible to improve the Buzz experience. We made a number of changes to the getting started experience based on your feedback, the most significant of which was replacing auto-following with suggestions for people to follow.

Rather than automatically setting you up to follow the people you email and chat with most, Google Buzz now suggests people for you to follow instead. This way, Buzz is still simple to set up (no one wants to peck out an entire social network from scratch) but you aren't set up to follow anyone until you choose to do so.

But many of you started using Google Buzz before we made these changes, and we want to help you ensure that Buzz is set up the way you want. Offering everyone who uses our products transparency and control is very important to us, so if you started using Google Buzz before we changed the start-up experience, you'll see the following confirmation page the next time you click into the Buzz tab:

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S7ZUkxT141I/AAAAAAAAAjA/gEdS8783dFE/buzzConfirmSetup.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455640989294519122" />

This page highlights your current Buzz settings and makes it easy to change anything you want. You can view and edit the people you're following and the people following you, elect whether you want those lists appearing on your public Google profile, and modify any of the sites you have connected to Google Buzz, like Picasa, Google Reader, or Twitter. If everything looks good, you can confirm your Buzz set-up with a single click. And remember, you can always change who you're following by clicking "Following XX people" from the Buzz tab or modify your preferences from the Buzz section of Gmail Settings.

To keep up to date with all of the improvements we're making to Google Buzz and provide your feedback, follow our team's Google Buzz account. For tips and tricks on using Google Buzz, check out the videos on our new YouTube channel: youtube.com/googlebuzz.

Building upon the Gmail for mobile web app, this new interface displays your conversations on the left and your messages on the right hand side.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S7ZT-me6BkI/AAAAAAAAAi4/I6xotE8C7NA/gmail_on_ipad.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455640333553108546" />
All the features of the Gmail web app that you're used to, such as offline access and aggressive caching to reduce latency, are present in the iPad version. Tablet devices are still very new, so expect changes as we continue to optimize for this new format. We'd like to hear any ideas you may have on how we can make Gmail better for the iPad so don't hesitate to let us know via the 'Send feedback' link at the bottom of your inbox on iPad.

To try out Gmail out on the iPad, just go to gmail.com in Safari. For quick access, try creating a homescreen link. Please note that the new interface is only available in US English for now. You can always access Gmail through the native Mail application using IMAP as well.

Posted by Sean McBride, User Experience Designer

Any Google Buzz post can turn into a lively discussion. Sometimes these conversations can gather lots of new comments very quickly, turning them into "skyscraper" posts that can dominate your entire screen, especially if you don't check Buzz for a few days. We've heard from many of you that these big posts can be a lot to skim over.

Today, we’re making some changes to how comments get collapsed in Google Buzz. In the past, old comments were sometimes collapsed, but new comments (posted since your last visit to the Buzz tab) were always expanded. Now, if there are enough of them, new comments may be collapsed as well. Here’s the nitty gritty on how it'll work by the end of the day once we finish rolling out these changes:

If there are 3 or more previous or new comments, we collapse them into a group.

We leave the latest previous comment (from before your last visit) expanded to give you context.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S7T7UQuMsTI/AAAAAAAAAig/mI6a_B0TiTY/comment_collapsing_1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455261374157205810" />

We leave the last two new comments (since your last visit) expanded so you can get a taste of the ongoing conversation and decide if you’re interested.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S7T7gmQSYsI/AAAAAAAAAio/Z2O8US6kUzQ/comment_collapsing_2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455261586095760066" />

If there are enough previous and new comments, we collapse them together into a single line to save space.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S7T7zIjwG_I/AAAAAAAAAiw/XaJmJoDgQEE/comment_collapsing_3.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5455261904541850610" />

You'll see the names of some of the people whose comments are collapsed, which can help you decide if you might be interested in diving into the conversation.

These changes will limit how much space any one post can take up in the Buzz tab and prevent the popular posts you’re not interested in from dominating the stream. We hope this helps make Google Buzz a little less noisy so you can focus on conversations you care about.

Posted by Sam Schillace, Gmail Engineering Director

If you logged into Gmail over the last hour (or visited the Gmail homepage), you probably noticed that something looked a bit off: all the vowels are missing. We realize this makes things difficult for all of you who rely on Gmail — whether at home or at work — and we’re incredibly sorry. We take morphological issues like this extremely seriously, so we want to let you all know what happened and what we're doing about it.

At 6:01 am Pacific Time, during routine maintenance at one of our datacenters, the frontend web servers in that particular datacenter started failing to render the letter 'a' for a subset of users. As error rates escalated, the strain spread to other datacenters. We worked quickly to avoid a cascading failure of the entire alphabet by implementing a stopgap solution that limited the damage to the letters 'a,' 'e,' 'i,' 'o,' and 'u.' As a result, we're experiencing Gmail’s first temporary vowel outage. (We’re still investigating whether the letter 'y' is impacted and will post an update here shortly.)

Over the last hour we've received numerous reports of this issue via our help forums, from colleagues at Google, and via email you’ve sent us. Some of you have already found creative workarounds for communicating without vowels, like Aaron, who sent us this:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S7PvkBdO1DI/AAAAAAAAAiY/6C2rq7OHkiA/vowelfail.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454966975821173810" />
Having 80.8% of the alphabet available is significantly below the 99.9% full letter uptime reliability we strive for. Since identifying the root case of this issue, we’ve started bringing vowels back to Gmail, so you should see them back in your account within the next few hours if you don’t already. In the meantime, while you may still see this issue in Gmail's web interface, both IMAP and POP access are functioning normally. We'll post an update as soon as things are fully resolved and, again, we're v3ry s0rry.

Update (7:30 am): We’ve determined that the letter 'y' is not impacted.

Update (3:02 pm): This issue has been resolved.

Update (12:01 am): Also, this issue never happened. Happy April 1st.

Posted by Pavni Diwanji, Engineering Director

A few weeks ago, I got an email presumably from a friend stuck in London asking for some money to help him out. It turned out that the email was sent by a scammer who had hijacked my friend's account. By reading his email, the scammer had figured out my friend's whereabouts and was emailing all of his contacts. Here at Google, we work hard to protect Gmail accounts against this kind of abuse. Today we're introducing a new feature to notify you when we detect suspicious login activity on your account.

You may remember that a while back we launched remote sign out and information about recent account activity to help you understand and manage your account usage. This information is still at the bottom of your inbox. Now, if it looks like something unusual is going on with your account, we’ll also alert you by posting a warning message saying, "Warning: We believe your account was last accessed from…" along with the geographic region that we can best associate with the access.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S6o0ttPzP-I/AAAAAAAAAiI/Ape8SFfJuHE/warning.png" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452228258730033122" />

To determine when to display this message, our automated system matches the relevant IP address, logged per the Gmail privacy policy, to a broad geographical location. While we don't have the capability to determine the specific location from which an account is accessed, a login appearing to come from one country and occurring a few hours after a login from another country may trigger an alert.

By clicking on the "Details" link next to the message, you'll see the last account activity window that you're used to, along with the most recent access points.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S6o1IRjTlYI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/Spzl4OTo0x4/warning2.png" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5452228715152119170" />

If you think your account has been compromised, you can change your password from the same window. Or, if you know it was legitimate access (e.g. you were traveling, your husband/wife who accesses the account was also traveling, etc.), you can click "Dismiss" to remove the message.

Keep in mind that these notifications are meant to alert you of suspicious activity but are not a replacement for account security best practices. If you'd like more information on account security, read these tips on keeping your information secure or visit the Google Online Security Blog.

Finally, we know that security is also a top priority for businesses and schools, and we look forward to offering this feature to Google Apps customers once we have gathered and incorporated their feedback.

Posted by David Marmaros, Software Engineer

As you can imagine, those of us on the Google Calendar team spend a lot of time thinking about scheduling. We regularly talk to people who schedule and reschedule a lot of meetings: administrative assistants. Talking to them, we understand just how much time they spend looking at schedules, investigating other people's calendars, finding replacement conference rooms and rescheduling conflicts. And then some manager's travel plans change and everything starts over again.

If you're searching for something on the web, you don't just start randomly visiting pages looking for relevant content, you use a search engine. So we decided to apply some of Google's search experience to the problem of scheduling. We experimented with using ranking algorithms to return the most relevant meeting times based on specified criteria like attendees, schedule complexity, conference rooms, and time zones. Just like Google search ranks the web, our scheduling search algorithm returns a ranked set of the best candidate dates and times.

Today we're launching the result of that experiment, a gadget called Smart Rescheduler, in Google Calendar Labs. Once you turn it on, just select an event you'd like to reschedule, then click "Find a new time...":

You'll see ranked list of possible times for your meeting. By investigating the calendars others have shared with you, Google Calendar can make some educated guesses about how easy it might be to reschedule a conflicting meeting and even find you a replacement conference room nearby. This process is 100% automated — no Google employees are doing any work behind the scenes. You can refine the results by marking people as optional, changing the meeting duration, ignoring certain conflicts, or specifying the earliest and latest times you'll accept. The results will immediately update to reflect your new requirements.

This feature is still experimental, so we'd love your ideas and feedback. Of course, we can't make meetings more interesting, but we can try to save you frustration leading up to them.

Posted by Grace Kwak, Product Manager

Today, we're happy to announce three new features in Calendar Labs. To try them out, just go to the Labs tab under Calendar Settings.

1. Event flair by Dave Marmaros
Want a little airplane icon next to information about your upcoming flight? Or stars next to meetings with your boss? This experiment lets you choose from forty different icons and add one to each Calendar event. Even better, if you invite people to your events, they'll be able to see the icon you added too. After you enable this feature, click on an event and look for the "Event flair" gadget to activate.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S5fFVEhTB3I/AAAAAAAAAgw/Mc4zo2gLRDk/event_flair1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447039240109229938" />

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S5fFy6w5wOI/AAAAAAAAAg4/Nhql2lDAco8/event_flair2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447039752886403298" />

2. Gentle reminders by Sorin Mocanu
If you keep Google Calendar open all day long, you probably end up seeing quite a few reminders every day. Browser alerts are okay, but I tried to find a way for Calendar notifications to integrate smoothly with everything else.

Turn on "Gentle Reminders," and when you get a notification, the title of your Calendar window or tab will start blinking and the event details will stay in Calendar.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S5fJ12k1D5I/AAAAAAAAAhY/y5FozLnf7eo/gentle_reminders1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447044201348140946" />

If you're using this lab in a supported browser (currently Google Chrome for Windows and Google Chrome beta for Linux), you'll also have the option to get your reminders in the next generation of floating desktop notifications:

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S5fGmMYdWsI/AAAAAAAAAhI/0QcRcCv0fJ4/gentle_reminders2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447040633789045442" />

After you enable this feature, you can configure notification options on the Settings page.

3. Automatically declining events by Lucia Fedorova and Miguel García
Have you ever checked your calendar and noticed that someone scheduled a really important meeting during your vacation or at a time when you're not available? Now there's a way to automatically decline events when you're not around. Turn on "Automatically declining events," block off times when you're unavailable, and event invitations during this period will get automatically declined.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S5fKdwMKw-I/AAAAAAAAAhg/hLuzShSpFjg/automatically_decline.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5447044886828860386" />

Posted by Emmanuel Pellereau, Software Engineer

My little sister recently setup her Gmail account to retrieve messages from her school address, so she can check all of her email accounts in one place. She no longer has to constantly log in to two email programs, and she likes using Gmail's powerful interface for all her mail.

However, sometimes she knows an email has already been sent to her school address, and she just can't wait for the next scheduled fetch to have it show up in her Gmail inbox. As any big brother would, I tried to solve this issue for her and millions of Gmail users.

Turn on "Refresh POP accounts" from the Labs tab under Settings, and the refresh link at the top of your inbox will not only update your inbox with your new Gmail messages, it will also fetch messages from any other accounts which you have set up.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S5WkjnZ-DwI/AAAAAAAAAgo/o6GczjLBl3U/POP_refresh.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5446440256154767106" />

Try it out, and let us know if you have any feedback.

Posted by Michael Davidson, Software Engineer

One of the lesser-known features of Gmail is its ability to help with multitasking. Frequently, I find that I need to find an old message while I'm composing an email. When this happens, I click on the "new window" icon to pop my compose area into its own window:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S4WC2-n-M7I/AAAAAAAAAgQ/pGFm-K7wxm0/fast_new_window.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441899605782311858" />
There's only one problem — it's been slow! Today, we're rolling out a change that will fix this (reload your account to make sure you get this change). Now, popping out a window is much, much faster. No more "Loading..." progress bar.

There are a number of places you can pop up new windows in Gmail.

In chat, there's the little upward arrow in the title bar:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S4xHAKGn4II/AAAAAAAAAgY/WJUwJZbaQG8/chat_new_window.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443804117621792898" />

When writing a message, hold the "Shift" key while you click on the Compose Mail, Reply, Reply All or Forward links and you'll get a new window for your new message. (Holding the "Shift" key while typing the keyboard shortcut — in other words typing "C" "R" or "F" — has the same effect.)

When you're reading your mail, hold the "Shift" key while you click on a message to open the conversation in a new window. (Same holds true for the "Shift" key and the "o" or "Enter" shortcuts.)

If you're reading an email and want to save it for later, you can click the "New window" link in the upper-right hand corner of the conversation view:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S4xHoN5UzCI/AAAAAAAAAgg/7A_KMSEkaKA/new_window.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443804805834525730" />

Keep in mind that the popped out window does not outlive the closing of the original Gmail window, although we're working on a way to make that better. Unfortunately, we weren't able to make this work in Internet Explorer, so to see the speed-up, you'll need to be using Mozilla Firefox, Apple's Safari, or Google Chrome.

Posted by Mark Knichel, Software Engineer

We launched Gmail Labs over a year and a half ago as a playground where engineers can come up with new features and let your input help decide which are good ideas and which don't quite work out. Any engineer at Google can come up with a feature, code it, and launch it quickly to tens of millions of users.

Labs started out with 13 features and quickly grew to 60, with even more on the way. We've received countless comments and kept an eye on our stats: some of these experimental features were adopted by millions and others trickled along with little usage. A couple have already graduated from Labs and we've already retired one: Tasks was the first to become a regular part of Gmail, Right-side Labels was retired when we updated the way labels work, and Offline Gmail graduated a couple months back. Today, true to the original intent of Gmail Labs, we're graduating six more features and retiring five.

Graduating:

Search Autocomplete

Go To Label

Forgotten Attachment Detector

YouTube Previews

Custom Label Colors

Vacation Dates

Retiring:

Muzzle

Fixed Width Font

Email Addict

Location in Signature

Random Signature

These decisions were made based based mainly on usage, taking feature polish and your feedback into account. We've also tweaked some of the graduating features to improve them before making them default Gmail features. For example, we've combined Go To Label with Search Autocomplete, making it easier than ever for you to find what you're looking for.

Search Autocomplete and Go To Label
Start typing in the Gmail search box (English only for now), and Gmail suggests terms that might help you find what you're looking for — from contact names to labels and advanced search operators.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S33abvGL0FI/AAAAAAAAAfI/a4zjS64MphU/search_autocomplete.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439744094967156818" />
We've integrated Go To Label into this search box as well. If you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, type "g" then "l" and instead of getting the old "Go to label" pop-up, you'll be in the search box with the "label:" operator filled in for you. Start typing the label you want to go to, and autocomplete will take it from there. All you have to do is hit enter. If you want to send your cursor to the blank search field, the keyboard shortcut "/" will do it.

Forgotten Attachment Detector
From time to time, we all forget to attach a file and sheepishly send another email with the forgotten attachment. To help save you from that embarrassment, Gmail looks for phrases in your email that suggest you meant to attach a file and alerts you if it looks like you forgot an attachment.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S33Z-Q7yNUI/AAAAAAAAAfA/Aalj4Wvfk08/forgotten_attachment_warning.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439743588654265666" />
YouTube Previews
If you're like me, your friends probably often email you links to YouTube videos. Instead of having to click on the link and wait for a new window to load before you can watch the video, Gmail now shows YouTube previews right below the message. All you have to do is click the play button and enjoy.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S33apBsjqFI/AAAAAAAAAfQ/_p-99VXVQ1o/youtube_previews.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439744323298240594" />
Custom Label Colors
Why settle for a restrictive palette when you can choose from over 4000 possible color combinations to help distinguish and organize your labels? Just click on "Add custom color" from the regular labels interface.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width:250px" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S33Z1mEH9dI/AAAAAAAAAe4/2LjjAml95-M/custom_label_colors.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439743439707567570" />
Vacation Dates
If you specify which dates you'll be away in advance, you won't have to remember to turn on the vacation responder when when you're actually on vacation. Set your dates in advance, and let Gmail do the rest.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S33Zl34plHI/AAAAAAAAAew/y9tdXB71bi8/vacation_dates.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439743169613370482" />
Retiring features is always a tough decision — we invest in building and maintaining them and we realize some of you are probably fans of some of Gmail's lesser-used features. But Labs are experimental features, and from time to time they may break (that's why there's a quick way to disable them), or even disappear. Over the next few days, you'll see Muzzle, Fixed Width Font, Email Addict, Location in Signature, and Random Signature stop working and disappear from the Labs tab.

We'll keep working on new Labs to help make your Gmail experience even better, and we'll continue to graduate successful features and retire the ones that don’t work out to make room for new ones. Thank you to all the engineers who have worked on Labs features — especially Bruce, Darick, Jon (the intern), Ibrahim, Chris, Keith, Chad, Michael, and Marco! Please continue to send us feedback and remember that you vote for your favorite Labs features by using them and leaving comments.

You can choose who can see posts you email into Buzz from the connected sites menu (click "Buzz," then "Connected Sites").

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S4LaGUJ5ayI/AAAAAAAAAgA/KTjL3TIy2XY/post_by_email.jpg" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441151101841271586" />

2. Prevent your boring chat status messages from being posted to Buzz. By default, your chat status messages are posted to Buzz and shared with your chat contacts. Don't want a boring message like "be right back" to turn into a Buzz post? Just put parentheses around it. If you don't want any of your chat status messages to get posted, you can always disconnect chat from the connected sites menu.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S4LX1QJIrcI/AAAAAAAAAfY/O6AC39ghpNE/chat_status.png" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441148609683303874" />

3. Look for the yellow line to see what's new. Can't figure out what's new on the Buzz tab? Posts and comments new since your last visit have a light yellow line along the left hand edge (if you're using a different theme the color may vary).

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S4LYQAnynWI/AAAAAAAAAfo/xk7bw46sjNw/yellow_line.jpg" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441149069373381986" />

4. Link to a post. Each Buzz post has a permalink, so you can link to it. Click the down-arrow in the upper right-hand corner of a post, and select "Link to this post." Of course, you'lll only be able to see the posts you have access to.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width:200px" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S4LYqQtBFII/AAAAAAAAAf4/LH8jkCkjiQI/link_to_post.png" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441149520366867586" />

5. Follow the Buzz team in Google Buzz. Visit buzz.google.com/googlebuzz and click "Follow Google Buzz" to get updates about what we're working on and send us your feedback.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S4LYC2J7w2I/AAAAAAAAAfg/iO3zjxuuub4/buzz_team.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441148843225498466" />

Posted by John Costigan, Software Engineer

Now that people have been playing with Google Buzz in Gmail for a week and we've rolled out the improvements we announced here over the weekend, we wanted to let you know about some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of Buzz. Here are five tips to get you started:

1. Format your posts. When posting in Buzz, you can format text just as you can in Gmail chat: *bold*, _italics_, or -strikethrough- all work.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 525px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3zdu8pvqwI/AAAAAAAAAeg/3vxsNg_Ac88/formatting.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439466248581655298" />

2. View a summary of your own Buzz activity at www.google.com/dashboard. The Google Dashboard provides a private, consolidated summary of the data associated with your Google account, as well as direct links to control your personal settings. As of today, Buzz has its own section on the Dashboard, so you can see how many people you're following, how many people are following you, and information about your recent posts, comments, and likes. You can also access your Buzz settings right there on the page.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 525px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3zd6a3BM5I/AAAAAAAAAeo/mQqwycgOE3o/dashboard.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439466445668955026" />
3. Use an @reply to send a post directly to someone's inbox. If you want to make sure one of your friends sees a certain Buzz post, you can direct it to their inbox with an @reply. Type the "@" symbol followed by the first few letters of their name, and select their email address from the list. Only you'll see their Gmail address — other people will just see their name.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3zdf1NsBzI/AAAAAAAAAeY/Rk59uvGayFQ/autocomplete.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439465988886890290" />

4. Try keyboard shortcuts to fly through buzz. Turn on keyboard shortcuts from Settings, and use "j" or "n" to scroll down the buzz tab, "k" or "p" to go back up, "r" to comment (same shortcut as reply in Gmail), and "shift + l" to like.

5. Mute posts so they don't get sent to your inbox. Comments on your posts and comments after your comments send buzz directly to your inbox. If you don't want a lively conversation to keep appearing in your inbox as people reply to it, you can mute it. Click the arrow in the corner of a buzz post and select "Mute this post."

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3zdMt61wWI/AAAAAAAAAeQ/zj6pNOLZc-M/mute.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5439465660511273314" />
If you have keyboard shortcuts turned on, you can also mute buzz that appears in your inbox by hitting the "m" key while you're reading it.

Check out our Help Center for more tips and answers to your common questions, and stay tuned for more here as well.

Posted by Todd Jackson, Product Manager, Gmail and Google Buzz

We've heard your feedback loud and clear, and since we launched Google Buzz four days ago, we've been working around the clock to address the concerns you've raised. Today, we wanted to let you know about a number of changes we'll be making over the next few days based on all the feedback we've received.

First, auto-following. With Google Buzz, we wanted to make the getting started experience as quick and easy as possible, so that you wouldn't have to manually peck out your social network from scratch. However, many people just wanted to check out Buzz and see if it would be useful to them, and were not happy that they were already set up to follow people. This created a great deal of concern and led people to think that Buzz had automatically displayed the people they were following to the world before they created a profile.

On Thursday, after hearing that people thought the checkbox for choosing not to display this information publicly was too hard to find, we made this option more prominent. But that was clearly not enough. So starting this week, instead of an auto-follow model in which Buzz automatically sets you up to follow the people you email and chat with most, we're moving to an auto-suggest model. You won't be set up to follow anyone until you have reviewed the suggestions and clicked "Follow selected people and start using Buzz."

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3c5K4C8M0I/AAAAAAAAAeI/0rlaWcLLGrY/new_Buzz_startup.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437877934079357762" />

For the tens of millions of you who have already started using Buzz, over the next couple weeks we'll be showing you a similar version of this new start-up experience to give you a second chance to review and confirm the people you're following. If you want to review this list now, just go to the Buzz tab, click "Following XX people" and unfollow anyone you wish. If you don't want to share the lists of people who are following you and people you are following publicly on your profile, you can opt out at any time from the edit profile page.

Second, Buzz will no longer connect your public Picasa Web Albums and Google Reader shared items automatically. Just to be clear: Buzz only automatically connected content that was already public, so if you had previously shared photos in an "Unlisted" album or set your Google Reader shared items as "Protected," no one except the people you'd explicitly allowed to see your stuff has been able to see it. But due to your feedback Buzz will no longer connect these sites automatically.

Third, we're adding a Buzz tab to Gmail Settings. From there, you'll be able to hide Buzz from Gmail or disable it completely. In addition, there will be a link to these settings from the initial start-up page so you can easily decide from the get go that you don't want to use Buzz at all.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width:525px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3c4mAP7w0I/AAAAAAAAAeA/JNZVbVgESjk/new_Buzz_settings.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437877300626178882" />

It's been an exciting and challenging week for the Buzz team. We've been getting feedback via the Gmail help forums and emails from friends and family, and we've also been able to do something new: read the buzz about Buzz itself. We quickly realized that we didn't get everything quite right. We're very sorry for the concern we've caused and have been working hard ever since to improve things based on your feedback. We'll continue to do so.

Update (2/18): These changes are now live with the exception of the similar version of the start-up experience for those of you who are already using Buzz.

Posted by Todd Jackson, Product Manager, Gmail and Google Buzz

It's been just two days since we first launched Google Buzz. Since then, tens of millions of people have checked Buzz out, creating over 9 million posts and comments. Plus, we're seeing over 200 posts per minute from mobile phones around the world.

We've had plenty of feature requests, and some direct feedback. In particular there's been concern from some people who thought their contacts were being made public without their knowledge (in particular the lists of people they follow, and the people following them). In addition, others felt they had too little control over who could follow them and were upset that they lacked the ability to block people who didn't yet have public profiles from following them.

Like Gmail's chat service, Buzz helps you create a social network by automatically setting you up to follow the people you email and chat with most. You can change, delete or add any contacts you want to follow.

So here is some more information about how Buzz works, and some immediate improvements we are making today based on your feedback.

The first time you create a post or comment in Buzz, we ask you to create a limited public profile (at a minimum it's just your first and last names). We do this so we'll know what name to display next to your posts — and so the people you follow know who you are. As you do this, we notify you that the lists of people you follow and the people following you will be displayed on your public profile. You can view, edit, and even hide these lists. The lists of your followers/people you follow are not made public on your profile until after you go through this profile creation step.

That said, we heard from people that the checkbox for choosing not to display this information was too hard to find, and based on this feedback, we've changed the notice to make it very clear. We will roll these changes out to all Gmail users later today.

1. More visible option to not show followers/people you follow on your public profile
If you don't want to share the lists of people who are following you and people you are following publicly on your profile, you can always opt out during the profile set-up when you first use Buzz or at any time from the edit profile page. We are making this option more prominent in the set up process, to ensure everyone who wanted to hide these lists can do so easily.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3SoHGY2JHI/AAAAAAAAAdg/GgquAcQXGJg/buzz_1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437155490070406258" />

2. Ability to block anyone who starts following you
We are making it easier to block anyone, by adding "Block" links to the list of people following you. Previously, you were only able to block people from following you after they had created a public profile. Now, you can block anyone, regardless of whether or not they've already created profiles for themselves.

<img style="border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3SoScBI26I/AAAAAAAAAdo/lVoRGioocj8/buzz_2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437155684855110562" />

3. More clarity on which of your followers/people you follow can appear on your public profile
Initially, we showed you a list of all the people who would be following you once they created a public profile. However, only those contacts who had already created a public profile would show up on your public follower list. We're making this clearer by explicitly distinguishing which of your followers have public profiles and will show in your public list of followers. With this change you'll be able to see who is on the public list of followers that everyone else sees.

<img style=border:0pt none; cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3Sqi-qOgsI/AAAAAAAAAd4/GoCxQQAptZc/buzz_3.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437158168055415490" />

We designed Buzz to make it easy to connect with others and have conversations about things that interest you, and it's great to see millions of you doing this already. It's still early, and we have a long list of improvements on the way. We look forward to hearing more suggestions and will continue to improve the Buzz experience with user transparency and control top of mind.
Posted by Edward Ho, Tech Lead, Google Buzz

Five years ago, Gmail was just email. Later we added chat and then video chat, both built right in, so people had choices about how to communicate from a single browser window. Today, communication on the web has evolved beyond email and chat — people are sharing photos with friends and family, commenting on news happening around them, and telling the world what they're up to in real-time. This new social sharing is valuable, but it means there's a lot more stuff to sort through, and it's harder to get past status updates and engage in meaningful discussions.

Today, we're launching Google Buzz, a new way to start conversations about the things you find interesting and share updates, photos, videos and more. Buzz is built right into Gmail, so there's nothing to set up — you're automatically following the people you email and chat with the most.

We focused on making the sharing experience really rich by integrating photos, videos, and links. No more fuzzy little pictures: Buzz makes it easy to quickly flip through photos and experience them the way they were meant to be seen: big and full-resolution. And videos play inline so you can watch them without opening a new window.

You can choose to share publicly with the world or privately to a small group of friends each time you post. And you can connect other sites you use, today there's Picasa, Flickr, Google Reader, and Twitter, so your friends can keep up with what you're doing around the web — all in one place.

To make sure you don't miss out on the best part of sharing, Buzz sends responses to your posts straight to your inbox. Unlike static email messages, buzz messages in your inbox are live conversations where comments appear in real time.

You can follow the specific people whose posts you want to see, but Buzz also recommends posts from people you're not directly following, often ones where your friends are having a lively conversation in the comments. If you're not interested in a particular recommendation, just click the "Not interested" link and your feedback will help improve the recommendations system. Buzz also weeds out uninteresting posts from the people you follow — collapsing inactive posts and short status messages like "brb." These early versions of ranking and recommendations are just a start; we're working on improvements that will help you automatically sort through all the social data being produced to find the most relevant conversations that matter to you.

For all those times when you want to share something but aren't in front of your computer, Buzz is also available on your phone. When you're out in the real world, a lot of the information you want to share often has to do with where you are: for example, you may want to talk about a new restaurant you discovered or the score of the game you're watching. So rather than simply a small screen version of the desktop experience, Buzz for mobile brings location to the forefront and makes it easy to have conversations about places. In addition to checking out buzz from people you're following, you can also see nearby buzz from the people around you.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JE4qNpFW6Yk/S3CJBHkyiwI/AAAAAAAAAdY/jsz5V-a3Tnc/buzz_mobile_screenshot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435995402542418690" />
We'll be rolling out Google Buzz to everyone over the next few days; you'll see a new "Buzz" link under "Inbox" when it's on for your account. We're still working on some features to make Buzz work well for businesses and schools, so it isn't yet available in Google Apps, but stay tuned.
